  • But after a summer move away fell through he is now interesting Brighton

Brighton have shown an interest in Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero should Mat Ryan depart.

Ryan has been displaced in Graham Potter’s side by Robert Sanchez since the draw at Fulham earlier in December and has been told he is free to find a new club.

Argentine shot stopper Romero meanwhile has not made any matchday squad this season, with Dean Henderson replacing him as United’s No 2 after two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.

And six months after his hopes of joining Everton were dashed when United demanded a fee before a move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami also fell through, Romero is now of interest to the Seagulls should Australian Ryan move on.

Reports also claim an unnamed Spanish side are already in talks about taking Romero on loan for the remainder of the season, while The Athletic have also linked him with a move to Beckham’s MLS side.

The news comes after former Valencia keeper Ryan revealed he has been encouraged to leave Brighton in search of regular football.

‘The day before the Fulham game, the manager told me he’d be giving the other goalkeeper a substantial to run to see how he goes, and would be keeping Jason Steele as his second choice as he likes the way he fulfils the role,’ Ryan told The World Game.

‘He added that if I get a good offer in January I should take it, knowing that I want to be playing week-in week-out.

‘It came as a shock and a surprise that he said that.

‘Knowing where I stand now, from what was communicated to me, perhaps it might be better that we do go our separate ways.

‘However, until that opportunity comes – and it’s a good project – then, as far as I’m concerned, I’m a Brighton player and I’m here to fight for my spot.’
