Canelo Alvarez insists he would knock-out rival Gennady Golovkin should pair meet in trilogy fight

Canelo Alvarez insists he would become the first boxer EVER to knock-out rival Gennady Golovkin should pair meet in trilogy fight… but insists ‘goal is to unify super-middleweight division’ after win over Callum Smith

  • Canelo Alvarez beat Gennady Golovkin via a unanimous decision in 2018
  • A first fight a year earlier was drawn but some fans have called for a third bout
  • Canelo is more focused on unifying the middleweight division this year
  • But the Mexican insisted he would knock out GGG should the pair meet again

Canelo Alvarez believes he would knock-out Gennady Golovkin and ‘do some serious damage’ if the pair were to meet in a trilogy fight in the future.

Their first fight in 2017 was a split-decision draw while the Mexican – considered the No 1 pound-for-pound fighter on the planet – won their second bout via unanimous decision in 2018.

After beating British challenger Callum Smith last month, Canelo is now turning his attention to unifying the super-middleweight division but the 30-year-old was under no illusions of what would happen should he meet GGG in the ring again.

‘I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, I did my job already by beating him twice,’ Canelo told The Ring magazine, as reported by MMA Mania

‘Right now, I want to stay at 168 (super-middleweight), and if (GGG) wants to move up, we’ll see what happens, if that’s what the fans really want.

‘I’m at 168 and I don’t have to do any favours for anyone. I’m at 168 and our goal is to unify here.

‘I feel good right now, I feel strong. I feel like I’m at my peak and I continue working hard.

‘If a fight happens a third time (with GGG), I feel so good that I most likely knock him out and do some serious damage.’

In 43 professional fights, Golovkin has never been knocked-out, with his only defeat coming against Canelo in September 2018.

Canelo, meanwhile, looks set to fight Avini Yildirim in his next fight in February in Guadalajara, before another quick turnaround to fight in May.
