  • Frampton will become Northern Ireland’s first three-weight champion if he wins

Carl Frampton’s bid to become Northern Ireland’s first three-weight world champion has been postponed for a month.

The Jackal has suffered a hand injury which puts back his world super-featherweight challenge to Jamel Herring from Saturday week to March 27.

Frampton has a history of frail hands but reports ‘just a minor twinge this time rather than the fractures which have required surgery in the past.’

Frampton, 33, had been poised for his comeback at the Copper Box Arena in London’s Olympic Park.

He adds: ‘The delay is unfortunate but the doctor told me it would be better to into this big fight with both hands perfect.’

The fight was initially slated for last summer but was pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic with Frampton instead facing Darren Traynor, who he beat via a seventh-round stoppage in August.

Herring, meanwhile, will be making the third defence of his WBO world title after defeating Jonathan Oquendo five months ago.

The winner of Frampton and Herring’s world title showdown is expected to face Shakur Stevenson next after he became mandatory challenger when he moved up from featherweight.
