Michael said after dinner, Catherine had to go and do some work for the film but he invited her for a night cap back at the bar.

He joked that it was like Lawrence Of Arabia and Catherine walked in like a ‘mirage’ through the hotel lobby later that evening.

Michael said that it was here that he delivered his infamous like ‘I’m going to be the father of your children’.

He joked: ‘I probably made a big mistake when I looked at her and said: “I just wanted to tell you, I’m going to be the father of your children.”

‘And she looked at me and said: “I’ve heard a lot about you, I’ve heard a lot about you, I guess it’s all true. Good night!”‘

Michael added: ‘I thought I had completely blown it but I’m happy to say, we remained contact and the rest is history!’

And they announced their engagement in December 1999 before marrying at New York’s Plaza Hotel, after Michael finalised his divorce from first wife Diandra Luker.

The smitten couple have since welcomed two children together – their son Dylan 20, and daughter Carys, 17.
