Chilling skincare products trend goes viral but do refrigerated creams really make a difference?

Rise of the personal beauty FRIDGE: Skincare fans are investing in mini chillers to keep face creams cool – claiming cold moisturisers can take years off your face

  • YouTuber Safiya Nygaard from LA shared snap of new beauty fridge on Twitter
  • Some say they’ve had a beauty fridge for years, while others are late to the party
  • Experts say cold products can help with puffiness, redness and cream’s shelf life

YouTube influencer Safiya Nygaard has sparked a Twitter frenzy by sharing a picture of her newly acquired beauty fridge, admitting that she uses the mini chiller solely for her skincare.

The social media personality, from Los Angeles, who boasts about 415,000 followers on Twitter alone, shared pictures of her latest acquisition and asked ‘I just bought a skincare fridge, have I gone too far?’

For the uninitiated, a skincare fridge or beauty fridge is a mini-fridge used solely for skincare products, as fans believe colder creams can take years off your face by reducing puffiness.

While the act of popping some beauty products in the fridge is not new – ask your grandmothers  – some seemed both surprised and impressed, by Nygaard’s purchase.

‘There’s a skincare fridge?’ asked one user.

‘The limit does not exist,’ joked another, with a reference to 2004 hit movie Mean Girls.

‘I just put my products in the kitchen fridge in the salad drawer,’ said another user.

Others chimed in that they’d been using their fridges ‘for years.’

‘I feel nothing but PRIDE for how extra I am,’ commented one about their own mini Redbull fridge converted into a beauty fridge complete with a brush-holder.

‘My grandma has legit been doing this since I’ve had life on Earth and the fact people are JUST discovering it makes me feel like a knowledge guru.’

In more recent years, beauty brands have been marketing mini-fridges that would previously have been used for beverages and snacks as solely for skincare.

But does keeping your product chill make an actual difference in how the products work?

Much like people will appreciate a cold drink during the summer, cold skincare can feel very nice on the skin during a heatwave and can preserve products such as lipsticks from melting when temperatures rise.

Keeping them chilled has other advantages. In 2017, Dr Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City told Allure that: ‘refrigerating products will help extend their shelf life,’ however, he said it was not always needed.

He added that the cooling sensation from refrigerated products could potentially calm itches and redness: ‘the cool temperature may calm over-firing nerves that lead to itch and discomfort in the skin.’

Dr Preema from the London Clinic told Virgin Media in 2018 that refrigeration best applied to products that were gel-based or to masks, as it would help with puffiness and redness.

They’re no evidence that the fridge will make your products work faster or better, however.
