The man then left the accident site before police arrived, they say.

Checks have revealed the number plates attached to the SUV belong to a different car and further enquiries have uncovered the personal details provided by the driver were incorrect.

Police allege the child exited a car on Brush Road in Epping before being hit by the large SUV which was driven by a young white male with ‘scruffy hair’.

On Friday afternoon the car was found by highway patrol officers at a property in Eden Park, which is a 20 minute drive from the location of the collision.

The alleged runaway driver has not been located but was described as looking caucasian, in his late 20s and having scruffy hair and a short beard.

The child was treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne with minor injuries and has been released.
