A kitchen renovation for $900: Couple transform their 30-year-old space with budget buys from Bunnings and a splash of paint – with spectacular results

An Australian couple who completely transformed their 30-year-old kitchen with $900 have shared how they brought the modern room to life with paint, shelf lights and new appliances.

The pair from Melbourne shared a before and after photo of their home to a Bunnings renovation Facebook group, attracting hundreds of comments from interested DIY renovators.   

‘All of the tiles, benches and wall paint was from Bunnings as well as the floating shelves. Flooring still to go down is also from the warehouse. Love the results so far and can’t wait to finish it off so I can start on the bathroom,’ Debi, one half of the renovating team, said.

They opted to paint the area using the Flooded Gum shade from the Dulux Renovation range with a clear coat over the top.

The floating shelves were priced at $35 down to $20 and the lighting underneath them are $10 stick on battery operated ones cut down to size, all from Bunnings.

Cupboard handles, plants and the Highgrove Grey paint from Dulux were also purchased from the warehouse store.

‘I love cooking in it. We took our time to decide on what we wanted once we did the bench top and tiles. Originally we were going to have overhead cupboards and a built in rangehood but we decided on floating shelves.’   

The result is an elegantly modern kitchen with style and space to stow away utensils, pots and pans.

What parts of the kitchen were transformed?

1. The Flooded Gum shade from Dulux’s Renovation Range was used to paint the tiles, benches and wall. It’s available at Bunnings.

2. Floating shelves from Bunnings were priced at $35 and purchased for $20.

3. The lighting underneath the floating shelves is $10 stick on battery operated lights cut down to size.

4.  Cupboard handles, plants and the Highgrove Grey paint from Dulux were also purchased from the warehouse store

5. The rangehood is Devanti and purchased off eBay for $139.

6. Cupboard doors were purchased for under $500. 

 

‘Love the transformation, gave me a good feeling. Good on you mate,’ commented one person beneath the transformation photos.

‘Gorgeous transformation! And you kept the stove and oven… looks amazing,’ said another.

A third added: ‘Well done, it looks awesome. You should be very proud of the work you have done’.

Debi said she would finally be able to relax once the flooring – which is going to be white or grey in sheen – went into the room but she was proud of the progress they had made.
