Criminologist reveals the situations where you should always lie to protect yourself – and the one time women are most vulnerable

A criminologist revealed the top situations where you should always lie to protect yourself.

Dannah Eve, from the US, has degrees in psychology and criminology and warned against ever telling a stranger that you’re alone in a public place because lone women make easy targets for assault and kidnapping.

Dannah encouraged people to lie about where they live, their relationship status, and whether or not someone is aware of their whereabouts.

The criminologist also asked women to get in the habit of saying ‘no’ when they’re questioned about sensitive information.

Dannah regularly shares safety tips and how to best get yourself out of dangerous situations.

‘No matter the situation or circumstance, you are never alone,’ she said in a video.

‘If you’re ever travelling or on vacation, and someone asks if you live alone – the answer is always no.’

‘You never want to put yourself in a situation where you could become an easy target – and somebody that’s alone, especially a woman who is alone – is looked at as a target,’ she said sadly.

The criminology expert provided a few examples of situations where people should lie.

‘If you’re sitting at a bar having a drink, and a creepy guy approaches you and asks if you’re alone, say you’re meeting your boyfriend even if you’re single.’

‘Or, if you’re in the elevator of the building you live in and somebody that you don’t recognise asks if you live here – simply deny it.’

Dannah suggested telling the stranger that you’re visiting friends you went to university with, or you’re just dropping a few things off for your brothers.

Situations where you should always lie to protect yourself

When you should lie:

When you’re on vacation by yourself and someone asks you if you’re alone

 What you can say instead:

  • ‘No, I live in the area’
  • ‘I’m on a family vacation’

If you’re having a drink in a bar and a creepy man asks you if you’re by yourself

  • ‘I’m here with my boyfriend’
  • ‘My husband is on his way – he’s just parking the car’

You’re in the elevator of your residential building and a person you’ve never seen before asks you if you live there

  • ‘No, I’m visiting my brothers’
  • ‘I’m seeing my friends from university’
  • ‘My uncle lives here’

When Uber or taxi drivers ask if they’re dropping you off at your home address

  • ‘I’m just going for a surprise party’
  • ‘I’m visiting family friends’
  • ‘A friend is having a get together’

If a stranger asks you if you’re new in town when you’re in an unfamiliar area

  • No, I used to live down the street
  • I went to school in the next suburb over

The professional psychologist also warned against revealing your true address to Uber and taxi drivers.

‘Tell them you’re visiting family friends, or you’re on your way to a surprise party.’

Dannah also revealed that you should never betray your lack of knowledge of an area.

‘Never tell people you’re new in town, always lie about having lived close if someone asks you.’

The woman said that it was important to practice saying no because someone can always catch you off guard.

‘Practice makes perfect – sometimes you don’t react in the way that you necessarily want to react.’

‘But if you have it in mind and you’ve practiced it a few times, it becomes second nature to you.’

Many thanked Dannah for her safety tips – with some sharing useful practices of their own.

‘If you think someone is following you while driving, don’t go home – go to the police station instead.’

‘I have an old pair of men’s boots on my front porch.’

‘I always share my location with my parents and friends just in case.’

‘When I lived alone, I had my dad record the message on my answering machine.’

‘If people ask me weird and random questions, I always just start speaking French and act confused.’
