Dangerous new ‘mutant’ coronavirus strain is detected in Adelaide as the returning traveller is rushed to hospital

A dangerous new ‘mutant’ coronavirus strain that emerged in the United Kingdom has been detected in Adelaide

South Australia Health said the case was identified a returned traveller who had recently returned from the UK. The person has now been rushed to hospital.

‘The genomic sequencing indicates the case is carrying the variant of COVID-19, which has emerged in South East England,’ an SA Health statement said.

‘There is no evidence that this variant of the virus causes more severe disease.’

The patient was transferred from a medi-hotel to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and is in a stable condition.
