  • United have improved of late and secured a 5-0 victory at home to RB Leipzig

Dimitar Berbatov has insisted that it is too early for Manchester United to be considered as contenders to win the Premier League and the Champions League despite their improved recent form.

After the shock 6-1 defeat to Tottenham on October 4, United responded by beating Newcastle 4-1 before securing a 2-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain.

A goalless draw against Chelsea followed, with United subsequently thrashing RB Leipzig 5-0 at home in an impressive display.

Former United striker Berbatov believes the victory against Leipzig will boost United’s confidence significantly, but he warned against getting carried away.

Berbatov told Betfair: ‘This result at home will do wonders for United’s confidence, as their home record hasn’t been fantastic. Not only have they won at home, they’ve beaten Leipzig 5-0! That is an incredible result.

‘Hopefully, this win will change their fortunes going forward.’

Berbatov believes that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves credit for United’s improved fortunes, but added that his old side need to perform with greater consistency.

Berbatov said: ‘Ole deserves credit for performances like this, it can’t be a situation where good results are the players, the bad results are the manager, that does not work.

‘I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that United all of a sudden can win the Premier League or the Champions League, it is too early and they need to become that word again – consistent.

‘They have lacked this over the last while, if they find that then we can wonder about titles, but they need to win games regularly.’

United, who are 15th in the Premier League, will be looking to move up the table when they host Arsenal on Sunday.

In the Champions League, meanwhile, United are top of Group H having taken maximum points from their two games so far.
