Manchester United have persuaded Edinson Cavani to stay at Old Trafford for another season, according to reports in South America.

Cavani looked set to leave United after less than a year and join Argentine club Boca Juniors this summer.

But ESPN’s Spanish language edition says the Uruguay striker has had a change of heart and will announce his decision next week.

After Cavani scored twice and had a hand in two more goals in Thursday’s 6-2 win over AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he has been working hard to talk the 34-year-old around.

‘I promised him Old Trafford is a different place with fans,’ said the United boss. ‘He has to feel, scoring those goals at the Stretford End, with fans.

‘We’ve got the best fans and as a goal scorer there’s no better thing to score in front of them.

However, ESPN report that Cavani will fulfil his contract and stay at the club for another season

‘Manchester is a fantastic place to live. I’m doing my best. Hopefully he can see himself being here for another year. He knows my feelings, he knows I’d love to have him for another year.

‘I’m delighted with him, you can see difference in him when he’s worked on fitness. He looks like he’s making up for lost time. He was out for seven months before coming to us.’

Cavani was understood to be concerned about his lack of playing time at United and was also angry over his treatment at the hands of the FA who hit him with a three-match ban and £100,000 fine for using the word ‘negrito’ in a social media post.

Last month his father Luis said: ‘My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again. Edinson is going to end up playing in South America – he would like to play for Boca.’

But it now appears that the former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli striker is ready to extend his career in Europe by another season and stay at United.
