Ella Eyre reveals an ex once dumped her because she was ‘making more money’ than him

Pop sensation Ella Eyre has revealed that she believes her ex once dumped her because she was ‘making more money’ than him.

The pop star, 26, was joined on the final episode of The Truth Flirts – the YouTube series from dating app Badoo – by Netflix‘s Too Hot to Handle’s, Kelz Dyke and Activist, Char Ellesse, to chat money and dating, power dynamics and who pays on a first date.

Ella Eyre, who did not specify which ex-boyfriend she was speaking about, went on to discuss dating somebody with similar success and the possibility of it creating resentment.

‘I think I’ve been broken up with because of it, but not because of my money situation,’ she explained. ‘Where you’re making more money, and the other person feels insecure about that, and can’t handle the fact that you are the higher paid in a pair, and I think that was one of the reasons why that relationship ended. ‘

She continued: ‘I think ultimately there is always going to be one that is more successful than the other – it’s just how you deal with it and which way round it is.’

Ella went on to highlight the importance of her dating somebody who likes their job, regardless of how much they’re earning.

She added: ‘It just says so much more, you’ve found your thing, you enjoy it and you’re ambitious towards working to a different level.’

Ella’s comments come as Badoo users reveal nearly half said that money worries and issues have in fact led to the breakdown of a previous relationship.

A quarter have felt intimidated on a date after learning that the other person earns more than them, and half say that they have felt negatively judged in the past because they didn’t earn as much as their partner.

During the episode, Ella also discussed the importance of her partner’s salary in a relationship.

‘Even if someone is on a lesser salary than me, as long as they have ambition as big as mine – to grow and have more from life, then I can stick with them and we can work together,’ she said.

‘But I think it’s when you date somebody that’s on a lesser salary who is cool, and is happy like that, then I can see later down the relationship you could have issues because it becomes a little bit like, who’s going to pay for this.’

And while Kelz insisted it should be the guy to pay on the first date, Ella had a very different opinion.

‘I personally don’t mind going halves, particularly if I have no intention on going on a second, and I find it annoying when I want to pay, and they don’t let you,’ she said. ‘If a guy wants to treat me, I’m flattered, and honoured, particularly if I like them more. If I like them, it’s a nice thing.

But I will always offer, because I will never expect them to pay the bill. I never want to be that person that’s expecting it, so I will always offer and if I like them, and they’re like “I want to do it’, I’m like ok!”

Char added: ‘It depends on how the date came about. Because if someone says to me, I want to take you on a date, you’re taking me out my yard so you’re paying, but then if it’s like “would you like to go on a date”…it’s different. Again, it’s different with women, we always both pay.’
