Elton John: Newspaper mistakenly publishes a photo of a lookalike

That’s not a scoop! Australian newspaper mistakes a man eating an ice cream for ELTON JOHN – and puts a photo of the lookalike on its front page

He’s one of the most recognisable singers in the world.

But Elton John was confused with a mystery lookalike by the editors of The Geelong Advertiser, which splashed with an ‘exclusive’ photo of the wrong man on Tuesday.

The front page featured an image of an unknown man, who bears a passing resemblance to Elton, outside the Lix Cafe in Point Lonsdale, Geelong.

Quite the scoop! Elton John was confused with a mystery lookalike by the editors of The Geelong Advertiser, which splashed with an ‘exclusive’ photo of the wrong man on Tuesday

The photo, which had been submitted to the Advertiser by a reader, showed the Elton lookalike enjoying an ice cream on Sunday afternoon.

It was accompanied by the headline: ‘Addy scoop: Elton loving Lonny.’

But it didn’t take long for fans to realise the glaring mistake after the front page was uploaded to the newspaper’s Twitter account.

‘Love The Addy but sadly that’s not Elton with the double scoop. Or the denim shorts for that matter,’ tweeted entertainment reporter Peter Ford.

‘Let the quest begin to find this imposter!’

Meanwhile, a fan of the British superstar tweeted: ‘Pretty good imposter. I’ve seen Elton impersonators that looked less like this guy.’

Another wrote: ‘Not Elton in Geelong is a highlight of today, I think we can all agree.’

The Geelong Advertiser declined to comment.

Of course, there is a very slim chance the man in the photo is Elton, as he had performed at Mt Duneed Estate near Geelong on Saturday night.

However, the I’m Still Standing hitmaker is rarely seen in such casual clothes and is usually surrounded by an entourage.

Café attendant Georgia Ashley, 16, was convinced the man eating ice cream was Elton due to his similar appearance and British accent.

‘He was just like anyone who came off the street… he looked very casual and blended into the crowd,’ she told The Advertiser.

‘I tried not to draw attention to him because he probably wouldn’t want that.’
