Emergency crews have raced to the scene of a gas explosion at a home in Portsmouth, according to reports.

Police and fire crews were called to Nelson Avenue in Hampshire at just before 2pm on Friday afternoon.

Motorists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area. 

In a statement, Portsmouth Police said: ‘We are currently at the scene of a fire at an address on Nelson Avenue. 

‘We would like to urge all road users and pedestrians to please avoid the area at this time. 

‘We will update you as soon as we have more information – many thanks all for your co-operation.’

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service added: ‘Firefighters from Cosham, Portchester, Southsea, Havant and Emsworth are currently at the scene in Nelson Avenue, Portsmouth. 

‘Please avoid the area to allow our crews to work.’
