A middle-aged woman has been hailed as a hero after she chased three hooded eshays down a street with a baseball bat.

The woman wearing glasses and carrying a handbag was filmed running after the youths as they jumped off a roof in Broadmeadows in Melbourne‘s north.

She has since been praised for her bravery for chasing the designer tracksuit-wearing teenagers  down the back alley.

The video shows the slim woman with a short haircut and glasses stroll up to three young males who scaled a property in a laneway.

As she held up her bat threateningly, two of the three boys jumped off a low roof and sprinted away with a large black backpack, while a third remained sitting on the building, smoking.

A patronising rendition of ‘Savage Love’ with the ‘eshay brah’ lyrics played as a soundtrack to the clip.

Eshay is Aussie slang for teenagers who prowl in packs, speak their own coded language and strut around in designer sportswear such as Nike TNs and Adidas tracksuits with bumbags slung over one shoulder.

Eshays are said to have spread from Sydney’s inner-city graffiti scene in the 1980s through Housing Commission estates and out into the suburbs.

Social media users were quick to point out the three eshays were no match for the woman.

‘Truth is she is harder than them,’ said one, while another noted ‘she be packing.’

‘A middle-aged woman I actually like. Batter up!’ one person wrote.

Another suggested this ‘battle of the ages’ may herald the start of a new conflict between some of Australia’s most feared people.

‘The war has begun,’ the commenter declared.

How to spot an eshay

Eshays wear Nike TN trainers with polo shirts, puffer jackets, tracksuit pants or baggy shorts and baseball caps.

Favoured labels include Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lacoste, paired with Nautica, Adidas, Under Armour and Ellesse.

Some eshays scramble words and put ‘ay’ on the end in a form of pig Latin. ‘Eetswa’ means ‘sweet’ and ‘chill’ becomes ‘illchay’.

Hard-core eshays engage in assaults, robberies and threatening behaviour against other youths but many seem to wander the streets aimlessly.
