The Juventus centre-back was back-peddling to deal with a ball in behind with Czech striker Patrik Schick bearing down on him, when he lost his footing.
Schick looked certain to have a goal-scoring opportunity inside the penalty area when De Ligt cynically flung out a hand and stopped the ball.
