Football is braced for a weekend of protest in the wake of the torpedoed European Super League.

Despite the eventual withdrawal of the Big Six from the planned breakaway, fans of the Premier League clubs involved remain furious with their teams’ owners.

Merseyside Police have launched an operation for Liverpool’s home clash with Newcastle on Saturday, despite the game being played behind closed doors.

Large sections of Liverpool’s support were outraged by their American ownership’s actions and an apology from owner John W Henry has done little to appease them. 

Officers will be keeping a close eye on Anfield and the surrounding areas ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off.

Tottenham increased security at their stadium for last night’s visit of Southampton. Fans have lambasted chairman Daniel Levy and on Sunday there will be extra security measures at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Manchester United travel to Leeds but the prospect of fans travelling to protest is remote. 

Renewed protests against the club’s US owners are expected but are more likely at the Europa League home clash with Roma next Thursday.
