Liverpool were left aggrieved after Jordan Henderson’s stoppage time winner was ruled out for offside in a classic Merseyside derby.

Television pictures appeared to show Sadio Mane standing in an onside position in the lead-up to Henderson’s strike but the Video Assistant Referee adjudged the Liverpool striker to be beyond the Everton line as Thiago Alcantara’s ball was played through.

It spared the blushes of Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, who ruined an otherwise excellent performance by failing to keep Henderson’s shot out despite a strong glove to the ball.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin leaps above the Liverpool defence to level the contest at two apiece

The controversial VAR call meant a share of the spoils in an end-to-end Merseyside derby which saw Everton finish with 10 men after Richarlison’s reckless challenge on Thiago.

In the end, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s towering header nine minutes from time earned Everton, the Premier League’s early pace-setters, a point.

Liverpool had led inside three minutes when Sadio Mane thundered Andrew Robertson’s low cut-back into the roof of the net.

Everton equalised through Michael Keane’s thumping header from a James Rodriguez corner on 19 minutes.

Mohamed Salah appeared to have swung the contest Liverpool’s way with a stunning first-time strike 19 minutes from the end.

But Calvert-Lewin continued his excellent opening to the season to make it 2-2 and Everton somehow emerged with a draw.
