A health and fitness blogger has been praised for sharing a candid transformation photo of how her body has changed between 2014 and 2020 – as she urges people to not feel pressured by the ‘diet culture’ at this time of year.

Kate Writer, from Long Jetty in New South Wales, said she finds it hard to look back on old photos and remember the girl she was in 2014.

In the first photo from 2014, Kate wore a pair of string undies and a gym crop top as she showed off her gym-honed physique.

In the second from 2020, she is wearing an orange string bikini and is ‘curvier/thicker’.

‘I find it so hard to look at old photos and remember being that girl,’ Kate posted on her Instagram page.

‘Not because I wish I still looked like that or because I compare my body. But because it reminds me of how obsessed I was.’

The blogger said it reminds her of when she would ‘exclude myself from social events’ so she didn’t have to eat out, and of losing time with friends, family and even her husband – because she ‘chose the gym above everything’.

‘It reminds me of daily weigh ins, secret binges and constantly wanting to be less,’ Kate said.

But the main thing Kate said it reminds her of is ‘sadness’, of feeling self-conscious and as if she was never good enough.

Having been both heavier and lighter, Kate said she can ‘tell you that weighing less does not mean your life will suddenly be better’.

‘Long term happiness, fulfillment and purpose doesn’t come from short term weight loss,’ she said.

‘I know that I would much rather be curvier/bigger/thicker, be free from diet culture and have freedom around food, than be “lean” and consumed by weighing less, seeing those numbers go down every day and counting calories in my lettuce leaves’.

‘I needed this. Ever since I’ve gained 20lbs over the past 3-4 years I’ve struggled with wanting to be where I was. But like you I’m happier and actually healthier than I was when I weighed less,’ one woman posted.

‘Love this. You are so inspiring, it takes a lot to create this mindset,’ another added.
