Well done: Florence Pugh features among the homegrown nominations at the imminent 92nd annual Academy Awards thanks to her role in historical drama Little Women

The Oxford born star, 24, has been nominated thanks to a stand out performance in coming of age period drama Little Women, but she faces stiff competition from a strong American contingent.

She will compete against comparative veterans Kathy Bates, Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie, with Dern the hot favourite for her role in Marriage Story.

The Noah Baumbach directed Netflix drama has been named in no less than four of the event’s strongest categories and is widely expected to do well.

Achievement: And with a limited British presence at this year's ceremony, Florence (bottom) features in the category for Best Supporting Actress, while American-Irish co-star Saoirse Ronan (top left) also gets a Best Actress nomination

It will however be in direct competition with Sam Mendes and his latest offering, the accurately realised World War One epic 1917.

Having already won the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 77th Golden Globes in January, its popularity hangs heavily over this year’s ceremony, with the film featuring in a remarkable ten categories.

As well as Best Director for Mendes it has received nominations for Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Mendes will compete against a strong American contingent for the award, with former winner Martin Scorcese also named for his sprawling Netflix opus The Irishman.

Todd Phillips also features for Joker, while Quentin Tarantino gets a nod for his love letter to the final days of classic American cinema – Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho makes up the group thanks to his work on psychological thriller Parasite.

Elsewhere Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce have both been nominated for their work on biographical drama The Two Popes.

Recognized for his portrayal of former Catholic Church prelate Pope Benedict XVI, Hopkins, 82, has been named in the category for Best Supporting Actor.

Meanwhile co-star Pryce, 72, gets a Best Actor nomination for his leading role as current heads of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis.

It is the talented British star’s first Academy Award nomination following a career spanning more than 40-years.

But it’s familiar territory for Hopkins, who claimed Best Actor for his iconic role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of The Lambs at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992.

Making up the British contingent, American born Irish star Saoirse Ronan also gets a Best Actress nomination for her role in Little Women.
