An 80-year-old great-grandmother and her three year-old granddaughter were rescued by a band of Good Samaritans and police after they were pinned underneath a car in a Florida parking lot.

Video of the rescue shows the child lying face down trapped underneath the vehicle, crying and unable to move as her seat buckle was still around her and the mangled stroller was partially wedged underneath the car.

The child’s great-grandmother, who was breathing but was lying on her side, was motionless as one of the rescuers asked, ‘Ma’am, are you okay?’

A team of Good Samaritans used a hydraulic jack to lift the vehicle off the ground until emergency personnel arrived.

The harrowing incident happened on Sunday around 1:45pm at the Arbor Ponds Apartment Complex in Tampa, Florida, when the great-grandmother was pushing the child in a stroller past a vehicle that was backing out of a spot.

Tampa Police Department Corporal Baker worked with firefighters to cut the child out of her stroller before pulling her to safety. ‘Baby Girl are you okay?,’ rescuers asked as they held the frantic toddler in their arms. The team them moved to the child’s grandmother pulling her out from underneath the vehicle.

The pair, whose names were not released, had just returned from a trip to the grocery store when the terrifying ordeal took place, Tampa police said.

The driver of the vehicle, who remained on the scene after the accident, told police he did not see them when he was backing his car out of the parking spot.

The unidentified driver, said he ‘felt a bump’ and thought it was a ‘large storm drain.’ When he attempted to pull the car forward he said, it did not move, and that was when he made the shocking discovery that he had hit someone, pinning the pair them underneath the car, Fox News reported.

On Tuesday, the Tampa Police Department wrote on their Facebook that ‘had it not been for the quick actions of Cpl. Baker, good Samaritans and Tampa Fire Rescue firefighters, a grandmother and a young child may not have made it out of this accident alive!’

‘We are proud of Cpl. Baker’s quick actions and calmness under pressure while helping this family,’ interim Chief of Police Lee Bercaw said, in part.

‘We are thankful for the Good Samaritans and Tampa firefighters who also jumped into action to help make sure this grandmother and young child will get a chance to see another Christmas this week with their family.’
