Harry Kane will sit out tonight’s game against Chelsea, but as he recovers from his ankle injury, he had time to warn Blues fan JJ Watt about the perils of going in goal.

Kane is a New England Patriots fan and caught up with the Houston Texans giant defensive end ahead of Super Bowl LV.

The England striker is still sticking with the six-time Super Bowl winners but admits to having mixed feelings as Tom Brady suits up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of their game with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

‘I stayed with the Patriots. I was loyal, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I had one eye on Tom – it has been an interesting story to see him go to the Bucs and do well. That has been great to watch,’ Kane said.

‘Obviously, the Patriots had a bit of a rough season, but I’ve got to stick with them. You can’t always have the highs, you’ve got to have some lows as well.’

While Kane reiterated his long-standing desire to try his hand at kicking in the NFL, the pair shared stories about being between the sticks.

After hitting a hat-trick against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League in 2014, Kane was forced to don the gloves after Hugo Lloris was sent off.

‘I used to play there quite a bit when I was younger,’ Kane said. ‘Then early on in my career for Tottenham, I scored three goals, it was my first hat-trick for Tottenham, Hugo got sent off in the game and we had no more subs.

‘I was straight in and my confidence was at an all-time high. I got put in goal for the free-kick, it was the 80th minute so to keep a clean sheet would be a perfect day.

‘I’ve gone to catch it and it’s gone straight through my arm and into the net. I was devastated. I scored my first hat-trick for Tottenham and I’m coming off the pitch because I embarrassed myself in front of everyone.

‘I actually fancied myself as a good keeper. The thing is with strikers and keepers, we are always giving each other stick about scoring goals in training and things like that. After that I had to stay quiet for a bit because I couldn’t say anything.’

And Watt, whose wife Kealia plays for the Chicago Red Stars, received a brutal lesson during lockdown.

‘I always joke with her that if you gave me one year of training, I could be a goalkeeper,’ she said.

‘So, during quarantine, we were training together and I was like, “Here’s my chance”. She fired one past my head so fast that I immediately recalculated all my decisions. I was immediately humbled.’

And Watt, who first watched Chelsea eight years ago, revealed his love of the football culture in England.

‘People give me stick all of the time because I started watching the Premier League seven or eight years ago; the first team I started watching was Chelsea.

‘Over there, it’s so intense and loyal and passionate, and that’s what I respect about it. But people are like, “You can’t hang out with Harry Kane!” I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.

‘Over here, it’s very commercialised, in that there are cheerleaders, you’ve got a half-time show, you’ve got the video screens playing commercials between plays.

‘I went over there and the one thing I took away from the game was, it’s so centralised on the game and the fans are so knowledgeable and passionate. I thought that was so cool.’

Super Bowl LV is live on BBC One, Sky Sports NFL/Main Event, Sky One and NFL Game Pass on Sunday, February 7, kick-off 11.30 p.m.
