After Mercedes (played by Jennifer Metcalfe) was shot last month, seven suspects were brought into the forefront after each admitting they had a clear motive for the crime.

Many fans were convinced that it was Breda McQueen (Moya Brady), given her recent spate of killings in the village.

After waking from a coma, Mercedes also claimed that it was her former flame Sylver (David Tag) who pulled the trigger and lied to the police just so she could see him locked up.

What’s next? In a flashback to the night of the shooting, it was also revealed that Liam Donovan overheard Jack and Grace bragging about the shooting

But in a shocking flashback scene, it was revealed that Grace (Tamara Wall) fired the first shot at Mercedes as revenge for her hit and run.

James (Gregory Finnegan) then took the gun to fire the second after wrongly believing that Mercedes was responsible for Harry Thompson’s (Parry Glasspool) death.

The flashback also showed Grace and James laughing about their crime together, but the pair were overheard by Liam (Jude Monk McGowan), who is yet to come clean about the culprit.

Fans were quick to share their reaction to the news through Twitter, but rather than slam James and Grace for trying to kill Mercedes, many fans praised their partnership.

Gregory Finnegan – who plays James – has now teased that the implications could be massive, if his character ever learns that it was actually serial killer Breda McQueen who murdered Harry.

He told Digital Spy: ‘Well James did it because he thinks she killed Harry… and the viewers know she didn’t, so I’d have to say [it’s] probably not [fitting], and it could be a nasty surprise if it ever comes out who did kill Harry.

‘They should definitely be worried. Mercedes and Liam have history and there’s no telling which way Liam would turn if he found out.’

Hollyoaks continues tonight at 6:30pm on Channel 4. A first look episode airs on E4 at 7pm.
