James Redknapp says Liverpool’s season ‘can still end in glory’ ahead of Real Madrid test

Liverpool’s season ‘can still end in glory’ with Champions League success and top four finish, says Jamie Redknapp, as Jurgen Klopp’s side prepare to face Arsenal and Real Madrid in crunch week

  • Liverpool’s Premier League title defence has failed amid spate of injuries
  • Jurgen Klopp’s side, however, can still qualify for Champions League in top four
  • They head to Arsenal on Saturday hoping to close five-point gap to fourth
  • Reds then take on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League
  • Pundit Jamie Redknapp believes their testing season can still end on a high note

Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool‘s underwhelming season can still end gloriously as Jurgen Klopp’s side embark on a defining week.

Liverpool’s Premier League title defence hasn’t really got going amid a spate of injuries to key personnel but they can still finish in the top four.

They travel to Arsenal on Saturday night as they aim to close the current five-point gap to Chelsea in fourth before taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool can still end a testing season gloriously by winning the Champions League and finishing in the Premier League top four, according to Jamie Redknapp

Former Anfield favourite turned Sky Sports pundit Redknapp is optimistic Liverpool can end a testing season on a high by finishing in the top four and potentially winning the Champions League again.

He told Sky’s Pitch to Post podcast: ‘It’s a massive week for Liverpool. At the start of the year, we’d expect them to be in this position in the Champions League, but we certainly wouldn’t have expected them to be in this position in the Premier League.

‘It’s been a really tough season for them – but it can be a season that ends in glory.

‘They have a fantastic opportunity to not just win a trophy but also get in the top four. They are still in a great position in the Champions League, where they’re playing against a Real Madrid team that aren’t the same that they were years ago. There’s so much to play for there.’

Redknapp added: ‘There is still so much to look forward to. They’ve got pedigree in the Champions League, as we all know.

‘They will believe, if they can get through this game against Real Madrid, they’ve got a decent draw in the next one [against either Chelsea or Porto] and they’ve missed the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Man City.

‘They will believe they can end up the season with a trophy and a top four place and it would still end up being a great season for them.’

After the trip to the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool’s two legs against Real Madrid on April 6 and April 14 sandwich a Premier League game against Aston Villa.

They last won the Champions League in 2019, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Madrid final.
