Jamie Redknapp claims he is not surprised at Daniel Levy’s timing in sacking Jose Mourinho at Spurs

‘I’m not surprised. Daniel Levy has done it before’: Jamie Redknapp maintains he is not shocked that the Spurs owner sacked Jose Mourinho just six days before the club’s Carabao Cup final due to the ENIC boss’ recent history of changing managers

  • Jamie Redknapp says the timing of Daniel Levy’s decision does not surprise him

Jamie Redknapp admits he is not surprised Daniel Levy sacked Jose Mourinho at Tottenham just six days before the club’s appearance in the Carabao Cup final.

The iconic Portuguese manager was relieved of his duties on Monday morning with Spurs sitting seventh in the Premier League after one win in six matches.

The north Londoners will take on Premier League leaders Manchester City which interim boss Ryan Mason is expected to take of but Redknapp claims Mourinho looked defeated in his last match in charge at Everton on Friday night.

Redknapp told Sky Sports on Wednesday night: ‘The timings are not a surprise with Tottenham. Daniel Levy has done it before. He was involved with the Martin Jol game (where he was sacked) at half-time.

‘I’m not surprised, I think Jose – having watched this season – you saw a manager who’s unhappy and when things go wrong he blames the players which is in his manner. They thought we can’t have them taking over for the next seven games.’

‘I could see it in his body language against Everton, sitting down, not interested. Once Jose Mourinho gets to that point it was only going one way.’

Mourinho was in charge of Tottenham for 17 months and replaced popular Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019.

The Portuguese coach led his side to a sixth-placed finish in a coronavirus-affected Premier League season and failed to win a trophy in his time at north London.

Tottenham have installed head of player development Mason in charge, who at 29 years of age has become the Premier League’s youngest ever manager.

Redknapp claims Mason has an opportunity to showcase his qualities and that the next seven Premier League matches until the end of the season could change the former Spurs’ midfielder’s life.

But the Sky Sports pundit did admit that Mason’s appointment was a surprise even though the club are still looking for a long-term club appointment.

Speaking about Mason, Redknapp said: ‘I’ve met him and like him. I bet he can’t believe it. These are seven games to shape the rest of his life. He has a cup final and still have chances of getting in the top four.

‘To have Ryan Mason in charge was a complete surprise and shocked us all.’
