He insists Abraham must use his ‘stature’ and ‘ability’ to score ‘important goals’ in order to secure his place as Chelsea’s No 9.

Speaking after the game, Hasselbaink said: ‘He has to improve in those moments. He did ever so well when he came in last season, for half of the season he was a breath of fresh air.

‘Second-half he had it difficult but that’s normal because he’s a young boy.

‘But second season he has to step up and at times he can do better.

‘With his stature, with his ability, he can do better and score more important goals.

‘Sometimes I wonder does he watch clips of himself after the game because certain times his movement can be better, his holding off can be better.

‘He needs to keep on improving.’
