John Barnes believes Jack Wilshere could help Rangers bring an end to Celtic’s dominance

‘He could help prevent Celtic from getting their 10-in-a-row’: John Barnes believes Jack Wilshere could be the catalyst to help Rangers bring an end to the Hoops’ dominance in Scotland

  • Rangers are yet to make a move for Wilshere after West Ham ended his contract

Liverpool legend and former Celtic boss John Barnes believes Rangers should sign free agent Jack Wilshere.

Rangers have been linked with the former Arsenal midfielder but have made no move as of yet.

The 28-year-old midfielder is now a free agent after leaving West Ham and a move to Ibrox could hugely benefit Gers boss Steven Gerrard as he looks to break Celtic’s stranglehold on Scottish football.

Celtic are on course to win 10 league titles in a row this season but that could come to an end if Rangers had someone like Wilshere in the heart of their midfield, says Barnes.

He told BonusCodeBets: ‘I believe Wilshere would be a great signing for Rangers – it really could be the perfect club for him.

‘He’s had a number of injuries throughout his career, but at Rangers he’d have an understanding manager in Steven – someone he knows personally, who’d allow him to stay fit and, most importantly, to play.

‘Jack would bring a lot to the table – he’s creative in his play and he’s hungry. He really wants to get back out there and has a lot to give.

‘Perhaps someone like Wilshere could help Rangers prevent Celtic from getting their 10-in-a-row.’

Gerrard has spoken effusively of Wilshere in the past, insisting the then-Arsenal youngster had ‘the potential to become one of the best in the world’ when he was joining up with him on international duty seven years ago.

And Charlie Adam, a former Rangers midfielder, has told the club to get a deal done for Wilshere.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer, former Liverpool midfielder Adam was adamant Gerrard and Wilshere should be reunited once again, saying: ‘There’s always a possibility Wilshere could come to Rangers.

‘Will it be a pay as you play? Because he will still be getting paid from West Ham, and he might just think I might go up there and play until the end of this season.

‘I could see it happening because Steven’s got that presence so it wouldn’t surprise me.

‘When a quality player like Wilshere becomes available you’ve got to grab the bull by the horns and try and get that deal done.’

However, former Celtic striker Carlton Cole has sounded a note of warning for Wilshere about a potential move to Glasgow, telling talkSPORT: ‘It would be a bit too cold for him. Plus you have artificial pitches up there.

‘When I played up there I had knee problems but some of the grounds had astroturf and I couldn’t play.

‘As soon as I play on it or train on it I’m out for a week with swollen knees so it wouldn’t be great for him.’
