A 15-year-old girl has been charged with robbery and assault after opera singer Katherine Jenkins was mugged in the street and left in tears.

The 39-year-old soprano had intervened to help an elderly woman on Kings Road in Chelsea, West London, who was been attacked by two girls.

She had been on her way to a memorial concert, attended by Pippa and Carole Middleton, when she was attacked – but still went on stage to sing because she ‘didn’t want to let the charity down’.

In a statement the Metropolitan police said that the teenager has been released under investigation and will appear at Highbury Magristrates’ court in the new year.

Two girls were arrested on suspicion of robbery, the force said yesterday.

The singer had been on her way to St Luke’s church to perform in a concert when the attack happened.

The service was organised by the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund – set up shortly after the 18-year-old, who was a close friend of Princes William and Harry – died in a car crash in 2002.

Henry’s brother Thomas van Straubenzee, who is one of Prince William’s best friends and Princess Charlotte’s godfather, sports broadcaster Ed Chamberlin and Conservative grandee Sir Nicholas Soames were in attendance.

Many looked in shock as they stood around the singer who is believed to have intervened when she saw an old lady being attacked

Miss Jenkins sang Silent Night and Oh Holy Night at the concert. A member of the congregation told MailOnline: ‘Katherine as ever was a brilliant melodic singer but I sensed a little spark missing in her mood.

‘This was particularly noticeable because about a week before I saw her perform at the Banqueting House for the Julien Macdonald Fashion Show when she sizzled.’

Earlier, following the mugging, the Welsh mezzo-soprano looked close to tears as she waited for officers to arrive.

She waved down a police van and was later able to help officers arrest the fleeing suspects. One was seen screaming as shocked Christmas shoppers watched.

A second girl wearing glasses was also seen in handcuffs near the scene as police spoke to her by the entrance to a building.

One of the suspected attackers was then put in the back of a van, which drove off with its lights flashing.
