‘I would love to play that kind of sassy or evil role, someone like Harley Quinn.’

When asked about her legacy on the ITV soap, Katie remarked that people felt they ‘knew her’ after being in viewers’ living rooms five times a week.

‘It’s very familiar for people which means you can portray stories easily because everyone feels they know you. I think we got it across clearly.’

Earlier this week she bagged the NTA for her portrayal of Sinead Tinker and her heartbreaking death from cervical cancer in the soap.

‘My NTAs win hasn’t sunk in, I was genuinely shocked. When I found out I was nominated, I was shocked, and then when I found out I was the only girl [in the category], it was so unexpected. I still can’t get over it!’ she told This Morning.

Joking about her lengthy acceptance speech, she confessed: ‘I’d not prepared anything because I was so shocked.

‘When you do big storyline, there’s so many people to thank. That was sort of my only chance.’

Katie had thanked her late grandfather Dennis in her acceptance speech, and Katie mused: ‘I’m not a big believer in angels and fate, but I think in this case, there’s something up there.’

The actress mused: ‘It sounds so self-indulgent [to say] I’m saving lives, because I’m just playing the character.

‘But you feel a certain way when young girls message you when they say “I’ve gone for a smear test”, so I’m so glad we done it for that reason.’

Explaining the impact the storyline had on her, she continued: ‘Me and Rob [Mallard, who plays onscreen husband Daniel Osborne] were offered psychological help.

‘But at the time we said we didn’t need it. But if you take yourself out of it, it may affect your performance, I was concentrating on being Sinead.

‘And after it, I found myself walking down the street crying, I went to speak to someone as I found it a bit odd, and they told me I was grieving’.
