Katy Perry reflects on feelings of ‘rejection’ after 2017 album Witness flopped in new song

Her album Witness was a commercial flop, selling only 162,000 copies in the US  – less than a tenth of the sales of her previous album Prism.

But the failures of the 2017 project appear to have inspired Katy Perry, based on the reflective lyrics of her forthcoming song Smile.

‘Rejection can be God’s protection/Long hard road to get that redemption,’ sings the Firework hitmaker in one of the song’s lyrics.

In the song’s most telling lyrics, Perry (real name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson) sings, ‘Goin’ through motions, felt so fake, Not myself, not my best, Felt like I failed the test.’

In another verse of the song -which features a cameo from Diddy- the former gospel singer crooned, ‘I’m 2.0, remodeled, Used to be dull, now I sparkle, Had a piece of humble pie, That ego trip saved my life.’

The record sales for Witness were indeed humbling for the pop star, whose worldwide sales for her records Teenage Dream and Prism equaled 10million units combined.

Witness, by comparison, only sold 900,000 copies.

Smile is expected to feature on the Californian singer’s forthcoming sixth album, along with last year’s hit Never Really Over.
