Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts to lottery losers – as Mega Millions jackpot rises to $1.25 billion after no player wins Tuesday’s drawing

Krispy Kreme is giving away free donuts to everyone who lost out on the latest billion-dollar Mega Millions lottery.

The iconic company is offering one original glazed donut to those who missed out on the $1.1billion jackpot after no winner was drawn on Tuesday night.

The sweet consolation prize is available during Krispy Kreme’s ‘Mega Glaze Days’ on Wednesday.

All customers have to do is show their losing lottery ticket from Tuesday in stores nationwide to get their hands on a donut.

It comes after the Mega Millions jackpot was increased to a staggering $1.25billion, which is the sixth-largest jackpot in US lottery history.

‘Tuesday’s $1 billion lottery drawing reminds us that we definitely hit the lottery when it comes to our fans,’ the donut chain wrote in a statement on Monday.

‘There’s probably a billion reasons we love them so much. So, this week we want them all to win some “dough”.

‘Krispy Kreme fans, you’re all winners in our heart.’

Customers are being encouraged to share their consolation prize on social media using the Krispy Kreme hashtag and tagging their accounts.

A Mega Millions lottery ticket costs $2 while a glazed donut from Krispy Kreme is priced at around $1.

No one won the Mega Millions draw on Tuesday night so the jackpot has been raised to $1.25 billion ahead of the next draw on Friday.

The Mega Millions lottery has not been won since April 18. Since then, there have been 30 straight drawings without a jackpot winner.

Friday’s jackpot is just the latest in a number of record-breaking lotteries, many of which have been won by California residents.

Winners could opt to get the money in a lump sum, but would then only receive an estimated $625.3million.

Any American who is fortunate enough to match all six numbers would have to opt to get their earnings in an annuity to receive the full $1.25billion, which would be dispersed over the course of 30 years.

Lottery jackpots grow so large because the odds of winning are so small. For Mega Millions, the odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 302.6 million.

Chances at getting a smaller prize, ranging from $1million to $2million, however, are significantly better.

But winners would also be subject to federal taxes, while many states also tax lottery winnings, though a few, such as Florida and Texas, do not.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands.

The current Mega Millions streak with no winner began after the jackpot was last won in New York on April 18.

That prize was won by a couple in Queens, who won $476 million but opted for the cash option – for a lump sum of more than $157million.

Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot for the drawing Wednesday has risen to an estimated $95million, with a cash payout of $48.1million after nobody won that prize Monday night.

It was last won on July 20, when a lucky California resident won $1.08 billion following 38 consecutive drawings without a winner.

The enormous sum was the third-largest Powerball jackpot ever and sixth-largest in American history, and was won by a single ticket purchased at Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles.

The store’s owner and family also received a $1 million bonus check for selling the winning ticket.

Powerball gives players a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the top prize. It is played in 45 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

People are obsessed with the lottery because they are given the chance to instantly make a life-changing amount of money for just $2, experts say.

‘Sizable jackpots generate enthusiasm because people imagine what life might look like should they win,’ Eric Storch, professor in the Menninger department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Baylor College of Medicine told Yahoo Life.

‘They may believe that luck is something that can be manipulated through magical thoughts or by engaging in superstitious behaviors.

‘The outcome is so substantial, should it happen, that people are anxious about “missing out,” thus motivating engaging in superstitious actions/magical thinking.’

But Storch insisted ‘the odds of winning remain very low,’ and added, ‘although players will accurately point out that the odds are still higher than those who do not participate.’
