Labor’s Tanya Plibersek steals the show with her bright red shoes as she blasts the ‘flashy’ Budget

Tanya Plibersek keeps it real in a pair of $129 heels on Budget night as she hammers the Coalition for excessive spending – but she’s got a long way to go before she matches Julie Bishop and her $1,500 Louboutin pumps

Tanya Plibersek turned heads as the Budget was being announced on Tuesday night – and it had nothing to do with economics.

The Shadow Minister for Women donned a pair of modest platform heels for the event in Canberra’s Parliament House.

Plibersek’s red shoes were impossible to miss, as she literally followed in the footsteps of Julie Bishop, whose passion for fashion and flashy shoes is legendary. 

The Labor MP’s heels – believed to be Codi Pump by Nine West, which retail for just $129 – were a far cry from the lavish Louboutins Bishop loved to wear on the job.

At Question Time in Canberra, Bishop was often seen in a Cora Patent Heart Red Sole Louboutin pumps, which retail for just under $1500.

Armani suits and Chanel cosmetics also form part of her regular wardrobe, with Bishop’s eye for fashion gaining her countless admirers.  

Ms Plibersek paired her ‘wine suede’-coloured shoes with a smart sky blue blazer, casual white shirt and smart dress pants.

She also didn’t hold back in her scathing assessment of the 2021 ‘flashy’ Budget, declaring it was a ‘Morrison-keeper budget’.

‘It will be all designed around short-term spending, big dollars to deal with political problems caused by the government’s own making,’ she said.

‘Take aged care for example, Scott Morrison was the treasurer who cut $1.7 billion from aged care, he was warned at the time it would be catastrophic for the system – it turns out it was catastrophic. 

‘What we expect – as usual from this government – (is a) big flashy headline, they’ll do really well with the advertising and then it will be Ts and Cs may apply.’

She doubled down on Twitter later on Tuesday night, claiming the Budget was a ‘marketing exercise’ that was designed to disguise ‘mismanagement and missed opportunities that define eight long years of this Liberal-National Government.’
