More than 50 sharks were spotted swimming near the shore of a popular New South Wales beach.

Lifeguards were alerted to the large school of sharks as they swam between Moruya and Broulee, on the NSW Far South Coast, on Sunday.

The sharks were swimming in crystal clear water close to the shore, with lifeguards using it as a warning for beachgoers to swim at patrolled beaches.

More than 50 sharks were spotted swimming near the shore of a popular New South Wales beach

Patrol officers in the Westpac Life Saver Helicopter captured footage of the sharks and posted it to Instagram.

‘The Moruya Lifesaver crew undertaking a few preventative actions with over 50 sharks sighted between Moruya and Broulee and both (life-saving) crew taking some actions to ensure all were safe,’ the caption read.

‘Remember to swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags and be alert.’ 

The eerie footage helped lifeguards alert swimmers to the potential danger lurking nearby.

‘Big shout out to our eyes in the sky for alerting us to quite a few gilled friends hanging with us at South Brou today,’ Broulee Surf Life Saving Club said on Facebook. 

‘Great teamwork between the chopper and club assets keeping all our swimmers safe.’

Many swimmers took to social media to admire the work of the lifeguards.

‘Great display of teamwork guys, well done,’ Surf Life Saving NSW commented.

‘Well done alerting us to the risk,’ one woman wrote.

‘Well done guys and girls,’ another user commented.
