Steve McManaman has slammed Alisson‘s performance against Manchester City, claiming he had ‘possibly the worst game that anyone has seen in the Premier League’.

The Liverpool goalkeeper gifted City two goals at Anfield on Sunday as Pep Guardiola‘s side moved ten points clear of the defending champions with a 4-1 victory.

The game was finely poised at 1-1 when the usually reliable shot-stopper twice passed the ball to an opposition player, which allowed both Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling to score within three minutes.

Alisson’s uncharacteristic display was heavily criticised by pundit and former Liverpool player McManaman, who claimed the Brazilian ‘threw the game away.’

‘The goalkeeper has possibly had the worst game that anyone has seen in the Premier League and for Liverpool,’ McManaman told Premier League Productions after the match.

‘They get back into the game at 1-1 and then inexplicably because he just throws the game away – not throws the game away they’re the wrong words – but he puts the game out of Liverpool’s reach with really amateurish mistakes.

‘It’s very unlike him. We know he missed the last game through illness but he was back in today. Even for the fourth goal which you don’t want to take away from a lovely strike from Phil Foden but you’re almost thinking that’s a mistake by the goalkeeper too. It was really uncharacteristic play.’

However, team-mate Georginio Wijnaldum was quick to defend the goalkeeper, highlighting the occasions the Brazilian has made vital saves to win points for his side.

‘When you play football, you always know everyone can make a mistake. If you look at the whole season, I don’t know how many players made a mistake,’ Wijnaldum told Liverpool’s official website.

‘And if you look at the other side, he [Alisson] saved us so much. It will always happen that a goalkeeper makes a mistake. You just try to fix it in the game.

‘We were more disappointed that we couldn’t change it around for him because if you look at since he was here how many times he saved us – he won trophies for us – it’s difficult that we couldn’t change it around for him.’

Alisson made two crucial saves from Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United last month.

The ‘keeper has won the Premier League, Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup since joining the Reds in 2018 and one Premier League Golden Glove award.
