Liverpool urged to sign Sancho or Mbappe as Salah replacement

Liverpool will need a ‘superstar’ to replace Mohamed Salah if Egyptian leaves for Spain next summer, says Danny Murphy with ‘Sancho or Mbappe’ talked up as potential signings for Jurgen Klopp

  • Mohamed Salah recently spoke out on a potential future move to Real Madrid
  • The Egyptian superstar is contracted to Liverpool until the summer of 2023
  • Borussia Dortmund are ready to sell Jadon Sancho at the end of the season
  • Danny Murphy feels Liverpool must bring in Sancho or Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool have been urged to press ahead to secure the sensational signing of either Kylian Mbappe or Jadon Sancho as the heir to Mohamed Salah by former player Danny Murphy.

Salah in recent weeks has courted attention from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona by revealing in a rare public interview that he would not be able to rule out the possibility of a future transfer.

And now Murphy feels his former club should begin looking to the future, and continue their impeccable record in the transfer market by bringing either Mbappe or Sancho to Anfield.

Speaking during an interview with Stadium Astro, Murphy said: ‘If you are going to lose someone like Salah or [Sadio] Mane, it’s about having a plan in place about what you are going to do to replace the numbers.

‘Liverpool’s team is heavily reliant on the front three so you can’t take a risk. You have to bring in a superstar.

‘I don’t think there are too many out there that you put above Salah in terms of numbers and ability to win matches and score goals. Maybe a Sancho or Mbappe?

Salah is contracted to Liverpool until the summer of 2023, and has also previously stated he wishes to break every club record possible during his time on Merseyside

Murphy added: ‘Liverpool will be planning. They have done well in recruitment for some time now.’ He said they are two big clubs and you never know what will happen in the future.

‘Initially I thought that doesn’t sound good. You think, how can you think about moving anywhere else? But you have to understand the mentality of a player who is from a different country with different desires and ambition.

‘Why would he block it off and shut the door? Maybe he has dreamt of playing for one of those teams. There are a multitude of reasons why players want to change clubs and try different things.

‘I wouldn’t criticise him for not ruling it out. If his performances were bad and he looked like a player who wanted away and had dropped off with his intensity, then I would say there is a problem.

‘But his performance on the pitch doesn’t suggest he has got a problem.’
