MAFS’ Mishel Karen forced to undergo surgery after injury on set

Married At First Sight‘s Mishel Karen was forced to undergo surgery on her knee after sustaining a skiing injury while filming her honeymoon to Steve Burley last year.

The 48-year-old tore her meniscus on the slopes in Queenstown, New Zealand last September, and chose to neglect the agonizing pain to continue filming. 

She then ‘lived in pain throughout the season’ before seeking medical help after production wrapped in December, and went under the knife on February 3.  

A source tells Daily Mail Australia: ‘Mishel could barely walk after skiing but chose to continue filming. A producer offered to take her to a doctor but she said no.

‘They’d been filming on the slopes for six hours and she was exhausted, all she wanted to do was get back inside somewhere warm and relax.

‘Mishel never realised how serious the injury was, she thought it’d just get better.’

On February 3, Mishel finally had an operation on her knee at Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane as the pain continued. 

Daily Mail Australia has exclusively obtained medical photographs of Dr Mark Dekkers cutting away the torn meniscus around her knee. 

She has been signed off work as a teacher for several weeks, and has spent thousands of dollars to cover the medical costs. 

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Nine for comment. 

Earlier this week, viewers watched Mishel repeatedly take a tumble on the slopes while skiing with partner Steve, before hobbling back inside a lodge. 

Steve later branded her a ‘whinging Aussie’ for complaining throughout the activity, with her responding that she was in ‘incredible pain’ still. 

The pair then appeared on the Today show together on Wednesday, where Mishel sat with a her knee wrapped in a bandage and propped up by a pillow. 

‘I’ve had to have an operation, I’m not just a whinger,’ she exclaimed.
