Mail+ poll suggests 72% of readers want Boris Johnson to return to lead Tories

  • More than 7,800 readers voted in a Mail+ poll on the PM  if Liz Truss is ousted
  • And the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson took 72 per cent of the vote 
  • The next most popular candidate was ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak on 9 per cent

The Mail+ readers have overwhelmingly backed Boris Johnson to return to No 10 if Liz Truss is ousted, a poll has shown.

More than 7,800 readers had voted last night – and former PM Mr Johnson was head and shoulders above other MPs with 72 per cent of the vote.

The next most popular candidates were former chancellor Rishi Sunak on 10 per cent of the vote and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace with 9 per cent.

Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons, gained 3 per cent of the vote and new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt had just 2 per cent. The option ‘none of the above’ was voted for by 4 per cent of readers.

Mr Hunt said he will not run for the top job, telling Sky News: ‘I rule it out, Mrs Hunt rules it out, three Hunt children rule it out.’

And Mr Wallace told The Times: ‘I want to be the Secretary of State for Defence until I finish. I love the job I do… I want the Prime Minister to be the Prime Minister and I want to do this job.’
