  • Man held up a Trustmark Bank in Jackson, Mississippi on Thursday 
  • He allegedly gave the tellers a threatening note before taking off with an undisclosed amount of cash
  • However, surveillance video shows the offender had pulled his face mask down prior to the robbery, meaning he was clearly identifiable in surveillance video
  • Jackson Police subsequently shared stills from the video on social media, leading to a suspect’s arrest 

A bank robber has been busted by police after he pulled down his face mask down during his heist. 

Richard Jiles, 41, was arrested over the robbery, which occurred at a Trustmark Bank in Jackson, Mississippi on Thursday. 

WAPT reports that Jiles is in custody, but has not yet been formally charged with any crime

Following the heist, the Jackson Police Department tweeted out a series of surveillance images clearly showing the robber’s face. 

‘A male fled with an undetermined amount cash after passing threatening note. Incident was captured on surveillance,’ the department wrote. 

The images clearly show the assailant with his blue face mask down around his chin, exposing the lower half of his face. 

The man was mocked on social media, with one writing: ‘The ONE time in U.S. history when it’s actually okay to wear a mask in a bank and this fool here’.

‘Wait. Wait. Homie took his mask off for the robbery lmao….my percentage of stupid [people] in this country didn’t stop going up,’ another chimed in. 

‘Not too many brain cells here,’ a third person stated. 

Almost all banks across America are now requiring customers to wear face coverings, saying that the threat of the coronavirus outweighs the risk a person will rob a branch. 

We’ve never allowed people into banks with masks, you know, simply because of the security risk of having unidentified people in the bank. The challenge we’ve got is that the pandemic is the larger risk right now,’ Paul Benda,a risk and cybersecurity expert at the American Bankers Association told KABC-TV.
