The native Australian bird can be seen climbing along the cage wire and people-watching as his owner peruses the store shelves with the enclosure secured on his back.

The post has sparked a flurry of comments from people delighted, if perhaps a little confused, by the unusual sight.

‘Just a galah at Bunnings. Hope he enjoyed a snag after his look around,’ one person said referring to the store’s famous sausage sizzle.

‘Just a bloke taking his cockatoo for a walk, nothing to see here. Move along please,’ added another.

While anyone who has been to Bunnings on a weekend will tell you dogs and puppies a a common sight, birds are a novelty.

According to the hardware store’s policies, however, any pet within reason is welcome as long as they are safely secured.

The galah, a species of pink and gray cockatoo, is found throughout Australia.

They are excellent voice mimics which, along with their bright colour and outgoing playful personalities make them excellent pets.
