Solskjaer’s side previously had a £50m package turned down for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Torres, who impressed against United in the Europa League final, is thought to be a more attainable target.

The 24-year-old has spent his entire career at Villarreal other than a loan spell at Malaga in the 2018-19 campaign.

United are also looking to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho and have submitted a bid of £75m for the England international.
