Master talent spotter Luis Campos is on a five-man shortlist to become the new director of football at Manchester United, according to reports.

The man responsible for discovering the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Anthony Martial was confirmed to have left Lille on Friday as part of a takeover at the Ligue 1 path.

That could pave the way for Campos to join United – and he is on a five-man shortlist that includes Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell and Ajax’s Marc Overmars, the Record has said.

Campos is thought to have been strongly suggested for the role by Jose Mourinho when he was United boss, with rumours circling that executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward felt the move would have given the Portuguese too much power.

Woodward may have been swayed by Campos’s exceptional track record, which includes helping to discover the likes of Bernardo Silva, Kylian Mbappe and Anthony Martial during his time at former club Monaco.

Former Real Madrid scout Campos also recorded a £63million on Nicolas Pepe and snapped Fabinho and Thomas Lemar up on free transfers.

According to the report, United owners the Glazer family want to add expertise to improve the club’s recruitment and transfer dealings.

55-year-old Campos raised more than £1billion across seven years at Monaco and Lille and is believed to be ready to test himself in the Premier League.

Mitchell worked with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and would become the most obvious number one target should United replace boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the Argentine.

Former Arsenal winger Overmars has admitted that his eight years at Ajax has been more than twice as long as he initially planned to stay.

Overmars has worked closely with former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to re-establish Ajax as a force in Europe, partly through astute transfer dealings.
