Marco van Ginkel believes chances of Chelsea extending his contract is ‘not very big’ as FIFTH separate loan spell in seven years comes to an end

  • Midfielder Marco van Ginkel does not hold much faith for his Chelsea future
  • The outcast 28-year-old is currently out on loan at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven
  • The Premier League side must make a decision by next week to extend his deal

Marco van Ginkel admitted that he does not hold much faith for his Chelsea future, with the club set to make a decision on whether to extend his contract next week.

The midfielder is currently out on loan at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven and has barely featured for the Premier League club since joining back in 2013.

The majority of his eight-year spell with the Blues has been spent out on loan at AC Milan and Stoke City, before committing the next five seasons to PSV on constant loan deals.

The 28-year-old’s career has stuttered significantly over the past few seasons after suffering a knee injury that has kept him out of action for over 1,000 days.

And now Chelsea must decide by next week whether to keep van Ginkel on their books or end their rocky eight-year affair.

‘Chelsea must officially announce next week whether they will exercise the option,’ said the Dutch international after PSV’s victory on Sunday.

‘I’ll wait and see then. The chance that I will play there is not very big.

‘But if I play matches I am of value. If they can make a few million more, I don’t know how they stand.’

With the current talent sitting on the sidelines in Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side, it is highly unlikely that the club will opt to extend van Ginkel’s deal for another year.

Connor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley will all return from Premier League loan spells with the goal of making their mark at Stamford Bridge, leaving the Dutchman way down the pecking order.
