After beating the soft fruit slices into the ready-made batter with a hand mixer, the mum split the mixture into two 20cm cake tins and baked at 160°C for roughly an hour.

‘They’re still hot, but smell incredible!’ she said.

The finished cakes drew praise from fellow bakers, with some offering suggestions on how to improve the flavour while sticking to a tight budget.

‘I think I might have to make this tomorrow!’ one woman said.

‘You inspired us. I was just about to throw out two tins of sliced apples not knowing what to do with them…definitely giving this a go,’ said another.

‘Brush the top with a little bit of melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar once it’s out of the tin,’ someone else recommended.

Others suggested serving the cakes with warm custard or substituting tinned apple for slices of pineapple.

Earlier this month, a budget-conscious bride created her own wedding cake from four discounted Woolworths desserts, some supermarket icing and fake flowers from Kmart – all of which cost just $60.

Danielle Leslie, from Melbourne, married husband Jason Cowan in front of an Elvis Presley impersonator in Las Vegas surrounded by 25 friends who flew over from Australia.

Having spent their budget on the overseas nuptials, but still wanting to host a party with family and friends at home, Danielle decided to make their wedding cake using a trick she saw on Facebook.

‘I had quite a few people ask me where I’d had it made and there were some comments about the beautiful French vanilla icing, which was from Betty Crocker,’ she told FEMAIL.

‘It was beyond easy to do… that was literally the first cake I have ever decorated. I didn’t even have the right tool to spread the icing so I used a bread knife and a plastic ruler.’

She purchased two white mudcakes from Woolworths – reduced from $4.80 to 96 cents – and two caramel mudcakes – reduced to $3.84 – to build the four-tier treat.

She then layered the Betty Crocker vanilla icing around the outside and placed Kmart flowers and a ‘love’ sign on top of it.
