Celtic manager Neil Lennon is set to punish Mohamed Elyounoussi after he was caught on his phone during their Europa League defeat to Sparta Prague.

Elyounoussi was spotted checking his phone by the TV cameras after being substituted for Leigh Griffiths – who pulled a goal back in the 64th minute during Celtics’ 4-1 loss.

Lennon was furious to hear of Elyounoussi’s actions in his post-match interview and insists he will ‘deal’ with the winger.

Having been made aware of Elyounoussi’s actions, Lennon warned: ‘He better not have been. That’s something I’ll deal with.’

Former Celtic player, Chris Sutton, was also furious with Elyounoussi’s decision to look at his phone – calling him ‘gutless’ and ‘pathetic’ for sitting on his phone during one of Celtic’s heaviest defeats.

Sutton said: ‘What I question is the players commitment. There’s a player this evening sitting in the stands on his phone.

‘That is totally unacceptable.

‘That’s scandalous. Is he committed to the cause? Is he committed to the club? Totally unacceptable.

‘I’d fine him two weeks wages for that.

‘I’ve sat in the dressing room for four or five years with Neil Lennon, I know what his attitude is, I know what he’d feel about that. You’re in it together, people talk about team ethic, is that a team ethic?

‘That’s a selfish, self-centred, egotistical individual who doesn’t care about the rest of his team-mates.

‘Totally unacceptable.’

Lennon’s men have just one point from nine and sit at the bottom of Group H following their defeat to Sparta Prague at Parkhead.

The Celtic boss said: ‘It’s poor. We started okay then got really ragged with the ball. Our passing, technique, just got really ragged.

‘I keep saying if we don’t defend set plays properly we’ll get punished and that is exactly what happened.’
