Premier League bound Emiliano Buendia is named Championship Player of the Season as sharpshooters steal the show at the EFL awards with Peterborough’s Jonson Clarke-Harris and Cambridge United’s Paul Mullin claiming the League One and Two crowns

  • EFL Awards announced on Thursday celebrated excellence on and off the pitch

  • Argentinian winger Emiliano Buendia has 14 goals and 17 assists this season

Sharpshooters stole the show at the EFL Awards with a winger and two strikers claiming the player of the season prizes in the Championship, League One and Two.

Norwich City‘s winger Emiliano Buendia claimed the honour of the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Season after a huge contribution to the gain promotion push back to the Premier League.

Buendia, 24, bagged 14 goals this season, as well as 17 assists – more than any other player in the division.

The battle for the top spot was particularly fierce with Buendia beating team mate, Finn Teemu Pukki, 31, who has scored 25 times and Brentford’s Ivan Toney, 25, who has found the target on 29 occasions.

Buendia, who has been linked with a move to Aston Villa and Arsenal, is a multi-award winner, having also claimed Norwich City’s fan-voted Falcon Power Player of the Season award.

‘It’s been a nice season for me and the whole team,’ he told the club’s website.

‘When you get relegated in a difficult season like it was, the comeback has been amazing for the whole team. The spirit in the team during the whole season is amazing. To get promoted again in the way we did it is something incredible.

‘When you get the confidence like I’ve felt this year from the club, the staff and my teammates, I can make the difference,’ added the Argentinian, who joined Norwich from Getafe in Spain for £1.35m in 2018.

‘I try to be close to the ball and score more compared to last year, but I always try to give an assist. I’m pretty happy with my numbers and stats because it means I can help the team to get the title.’

Meanwhile, Peterborough United’s Jonson Clarke-Harris, 26, who joined from Bristol Rovers in August for £1.3 million, was awarded the Sky Bet League One Player of the Season.

Clarke-Harris pipped Sunderland AFC’s Charlie Wyke, 28, who also has 29 goals this season, and Hull City’s George Honeyman, 26, who boasts 15 assists from midfield.

Another sharpshooter in Sky Bet League Two claimed the accolade of Player of the Season, as Paul Mullin’s 30 goals in all competitions have given Cambridge United one eye on promotion to League One with just two games remaining.
