Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains hopeful that Edinson Cavani will stay at Manchester United next season, despite doubts over his future at the club.

The Uruguayan international has made a positive impact at Old Trafford since joining the club last summer on a one-year deal.

However his future was plunged into doubt after the striker’s father Luis said that Cavani ‘does not feel comfortable in England‘, with reports claiming he could join Boca Juniors at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s contract ends in June, and Solskjaer is still hopeful that Cavani will agree to an extension.

‘We’re speaking to Eddy,’ Solskjaer said ahead of United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester.

‘Edinson is a top striker and whatever he decides to do, let’s see. We’re in good dialogue with him.

‘We want a competitive squad and we need someone up there to score the goals for us. So we’re looking at it.’

The 34-year-old was fined £100,000 for the use of ‘negrito’ in a social media post earlier in the season and this episode is said to have left him feeling unfairly treated by the FA.

His father said that Cavani has already held talks with Boca Juniors vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme, and has always been ‘seduced’ by the idea of playing for the Argentinian side.

However, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli striker took to social media earlier this month posting a picture of him playing for the Red Devils.

Alongside the image he posted the caption: ‘Proud to wear this shirt @ManUtd.’

Cavani has scored seven goals in 25 appearances for United but missed a number of games.

The former striker has been absent for eight of the last nine matches due to muscle injuries.
