Olympian Adam Peaty had something thrown at him during an alleged spat with Team GB teammate Luke Greenbank which left him with a gash above his eye, it was claimed today.

There were reports of a punch-up between the swimming duo after Peaty allegedly made a joke about Greenbank’s girlfriend, Anna Hopkin, and slapped his peer on the bottom.

Ms Hopkin, who is an Olympic champion herself, has been in a relationship with Greenback for more than two years.

The altercation is said to have broken out at a Team GB swimming training camp in Loughborough last Friday. According to witnesses, the fight was sparked when Peaty cracked a joke to Greenback and then hit him on the rump.

According to a report by the State of Swimming website, Peaty was hit with an object that was thrown at him.  After Peaty made a comment that annoyed Greenback, instead of throwing a punch, he is said to have thrown a piece of equipment on the poolside. It is not immediately clear what this piece of equipment was.

A source told The Sun: ‘It was absolute carnage. Peaty was being cocky and made a joke at Greenbank’s expense, before touching his backside. But his actions touched a real nerve for Greenbank and it got very heated. Peaty was left with a bloody face and needing treatment.’

However, it has since been alleged that Peaty was treated with disinfectant and by the time he attended an appointment with a spa sponsor, he wasn’t even wearing a plaster.

A source close to Peaty told MailOnline the pair were still training together every day and dismissed reports that the star required stitches. It was a heated moment after a training session between two team-mates,’ the source said. ‘Adam is still training and only suffered minor injuries.

‘They are fine with each other now. It’s been massively blown out of proportion.’

Representatives for Peaty declined to comment. A spokesman for British Swimming, the governing body, said: ‘An incident occurred at a recent training session that was quickly and effectively resolved by the athletes involved and the staff present at the session.’

Greenbank and Peaty had previously competed alongside each other during Team GB relay races and even won silver in the 100m medley at the Tokyo Olympics.

Peaty took time away from swimming in March as he attempted to focus on his mental health and wellbeing.

He split from Eiri Munro, mum to his three-year-old son George, last August and is now seeing TV chef Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Holly.
