Oscars 2020: Laura Dern and Joaquin Phoenix supported by their mothers

Laura Dern and Joaquin Phoenix were joined by their mothers at the 2020 Academy Awards on Sunday night.

The 53-year-old star, who picked up the Best Supporting Actress prize for her role in Marriage Story, brought her supportive mother Diane Ladd, 84, along as her plus one, and dedicated her win to her hardworking parents.

Meanwhile, Joaquin, 45, was accompanied by his proud mother Arlyn, who watched as he collected the Best Actor gong for his chilling performance in Joker, paying tribute to his late brother River Phoenix onstage.

Also bringing their mother along to the event was Keanu Reeves, 55, who went arm-in-arm with his trendy mum Patricia Taylor.

Laura made hearts melt when she dedicated her Best Supporting Actress Academy Award to both her parents.

‘Some say never meet your heroes, but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents,’ the actress said in her acceptance speech.

‘I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You got game. I love you,’ she said.

Her mother had tears in her eyes as she watched her daughter on stage with her Oscar.

In 1975, a seven-year-old Laura had accompanied her mom the Oscars when Ladd was nominated in the best supporting actress category for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

Meanwhile, Joaquin fought back tears quoting his late brother River while accepting his Best Actor trophy for Joker.

The star was only 19 when River died, age 23, from an overdose of morphine and cocaine (speedball).

‘I just… I want to um… when he… when he was… when he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric,’ Joaquin struggled to say onstage Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. ‘Run to the rescue love and peace will follow.’

Phoenix was the one who called 9-1-1 when his teen idol sibling collapsed and suffered seizures outside Sunset Strip hotspot The Viper Room in October 1993, before sadly passing away.
