Life as newlyweds has got off to a fiery start for one Sydney couple, after a garage fire forced the bride and groom to spend their wedding night with relatives.

Hayden and Hannah Potter returned home from tying the knot on Sunday evening  to find emergency services lining the street outside their Penrith apartment.

As fire crews worked to extinguish a car fire in their underground garage, the wedding party were forced to stand in the street, still in their evening wear.

‘Well, we didn’t have enough fairy lights at the wedding so now we have got these trucks,’ Mr Potter told 9News

The newlyweds were barred from entering the building and instead spent the night at their parents’ house.

They returned home the following morning in good spirits, despite news of the lack of running water which had been cut off due to fire damage.

‘So many complications, as with any wedding, but this was just the cherry on top, right? So, it’s all good,’ Mr Potter said cheerfully.

Bridesmaid Jaime Swavley said at one point in the evening it had looked like she would have to share a bedroom with the bride and groom.

‘Initially, we thought we’d all have to share the same room, which was a bit crazy. But thankfully they could have their own space,’ Ms Swavley said.
