Pink says she ‘didn’t really want to be a mom’ before birth of her daughter

Pop superstar Pink loves being a mom — but she admitted in a new interview today that it was never really on her to-do list.

Th 41-year-old was promoting her new documentary, ‘All I Know So Far,’ on the Today show this morning when she told Carson Daly about how her life changed since welcoming her nine-year-old daughter Willow and four-year-old son Jameson with husband Carey Hart.

‘I didn’t really want to be a mom. I didn’t not not want to be a mom. But it just wasn’t sort of on my list of to-do’s,’ she said. 

Though motherhood may not have been a must-do for Pink, she’s certainly loving life as a mother-of-two. 

‘I had Willow and, man, that saying of “watching your heart go walking outside of your body” — it’s truly how it feels,’ she said.

The star, who regularly shares photos of her children on Instagram, is also giving fans a peek at family life in her upcoming documentary, which premieres on Amazon this Friday.  

‘All I Know So Far’ follows Pink on her Beautiful Trauma tour in 2019, showing how she juggled being a famous performer and caring for her kids backstage. 

‘I made the documentary because as kids we create this narrative about our parents, and how our childhood was and how hard we had it,’ she said.

‘I was like, “Well if I make this documentary, then they can see how loved they are and clothed and fed, and how I rearranged the cells of my being to be there for them.”‘

She certainly seems to have things figured out, so much so that she says other stars have asked for her advice. 

‘There are many other pop star moms that have called me for the recipe… because for some reason people think I have it figured out,’ she said — but disagreed that she has some sort of secret.

‘Life feels like a series of “we’ll just deal with it,”‘ she said. ‘I don’t know what I’m doing half the time, but I’m trying to just be honest about all of it. 

‘The thing that I’ve realized, especially in the last year of being quarantined, is that I’m a person that needs, I need a minute sometimes.

‘I don’t have to find somebody’s sippy cup, but my kids follow me to the bathroom. So, we all need to find a way to disconnect sometimes from something, and I can’t hide in the bathroom because, again, they know how to pick a lock and they will find me,’ she said.

In her interview with Carson Daly on Today, Pink also got candid about her mental health, which she addresses in the documentary as well. 

‘Even though I’m headlining stadiums and I’m this person that calls herself a color and people know of me, I’m still just a human being trying to figure all this s*** out,’ she said.

That means that sometimes she gets overwhelmed.

‘I remember the first time I went on TRL, I had my outfit and everyone around me was crazy excited. And I just numb down, because I get so easily overwhelmed that my body just numbs down. And that’s how I am sometimes in a show,’ she said. 

‘I got on stage, and I was like, “Just another show,”‘ she said.

The star is hopeful that the ‘taboo’ around mental health is going away because ‘more and more people are talking about’ their struggles.

‘I think talking about it is the most important thing,’ she said.

She also expressed gratitude that she has been able to help others. In her documentary, Pink gets a letter from a fan who was suicidal but said that Pink’s music helped her. 

‘It’s the highest honor a person can have, I think, is to affect someone else’s life in a positive way,’ she said. 

The Sun offered a sneak peak at the documentary this week, writing that Pink reveals she is worried her children will one day ‘see through the act’ she puts on.

‘I’m their mom and their friend, but one day they’re going to see through all of it, they’re going to see the act, and they’re going to find the truth underneath,’ she says.

‘My kids grew up with the hotels and the jets and never having to worry about money. [But] they’re going to discover little Alecia, who’s still hiding in here, who’s still learning how to heal, and I just hope they have the grace and the heart to accept I’m human like them.’

In the trailer, she says: ‘I always wanted to be a rock star, but I dreamed of being a mom. Now to have my family, my team, my fans here with me, this is beyond my wildest dreams.’

The trailer cuts between footage of her fans having a blast on the floor and Pink performing on stage before it cuts back stage with her son Jameson calling for his ‘mama.’

She’s seen holding her son and kissing him while walking through the backstage area, and says in a voiceover that ‘there’s no way a mother can walk away from her babies and not think about them every single second.’

She’s also heard saying that a lot of performing moms ‘stop touring because you can’t imagine being able to do both.’

‘You just wanna go to summer camp and have a bouncy house, but momma’s on tour,’ Pink says, while Willow agrees, ‘Yeah.’

The singer adds that her family ‘goes all over the world and we’re surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do.’

‘That’s more of an education than I got,’ she says. 

Speaking to People earlier this month, Pink got candid about the difficulty of touring with children. 

‘Touring with kids is impossible — and I did the impossible,’ she said. ‘For a while there were a lot of other pop stars that were emailing me and calling me for the playbook on how to tour with kids, so I wrote a playbook for other moms.

‘You just keep going. I’m just thinking about: “Am I raising a kind person? What’s it like to be my kid?”‘   

She regularly asks herself if she’s ‘doing the right thing’ when it comes to finding the perfect work/life balance with her unique career. 

‘”Can a woman have it all? What does that even mean?” And the answer is no, most of the time you can’t, and it feels like you’re climbing Mount Everest,’ she said. ‘But it’s also so magical what I get to do and who I get to be in this life.’  

Pink noted that for her kids, ‘normal is different’ with a pop star mother. 

‘We go on tour and have a ball pit in Mommy’s dressing room. But they are normal kids. Jameson wants to be an astronaut,’ she said.

‘Willow does gymnastics and reads Harry Potter and is convinced she’s going to Hogwarts when she’s 11, and I don’t have the heart to tell her that she’s not.’
